Is an inversion table at home a good idea to stretch out the lower back?

My neighbor has one and swears by them, even suggesting I buy one. Any thoughts as to the effectiveness of these machines?

Works for some but often we see patients who got worse using one.

I think the inversion table is great, though I have two concerns. 1) I believe its best to hang from the waist vs the ankles & 2) A Subluxation is a Subluxation and traction on a particular region of the spine will not remove a subluxation though the may be of some relief to symptoms. Lack of symptoms do not equal subluxation free.

You need to be examined before you start inversion therapy. It may work wonders but you have to rule in/out any other complications factors. See your chiropractor first and then ask his/her opinion.

An inversion table works primarily by applying traction to the spine. The reported physiological potential benefits include: relaxation of muscle activity, opening of spinal canals , distraction of discs and improved range of motion. Anyone would be well advised to check with their primary care physician before implementing inversion therapy -- as there are a host of contraindications including: hydrocephalus, berry aneurysm, circulatory or heart disturbance, high blood pressure, recent stroke, glaucoma, retinal detachment, brittle bones or recent hip replacement.

As a general rule of thumb, most people find them beneficial but underlying structural problems could be aggravated. If there is presently symptoms (ie: pain, spasm) then you need to consult your Doctor before trying it. Try using your neighbors a couple of times.

Inversion tables are a great home decompression therapy. You need to be careful if you have ankle or knee problems and if you have high blood pressure. Other than that I suggest you try your neighbors for a few times before you buy one.
An inversion table can be of benefit for some low back conditions when used correctly. Spinal Decompression therapy is much more successful and safer with a Doctors care. You should see a Chiropractor and have an evaluation just to be sure what is really wrong and what treatments would be best. Chiropractors have the most expertise for healing low back injuries without surgery. If surgery is needed they can send you to a good surgeon at last resort.

You have to understand why you back hurts first before trying inversion. By the way, DO NOT TWIST UPSIDE DOWN WHILE HANGING LIKE THEY DO IN THE COMMERCIAL!!!
Yes, they are great! Just be sure not to overuse as it can lead to the reversal of proper spinal curvatures. I recommend using every other day for no more than 10 minutes or as needed for pain.

Inversion tables scare me. I got on one and was shocked how much pressure I felt in my head. If a person has high blood pressure or something called an AVM it would not be the best option. Use that many and spend it on a portable lumbar traction unit.
