  1. Ask DoctorBase is a free service for patients on the DoctorBase platform - currently servicing over 6 million American patients of record.
  2. All answers submitted by healthcare professionals (you) are for entertainment purposes only and do not constitute doctor-patient relationships. All patients must agree to this before using Ask DoctorBase.
  3. Our software and our Marketing Engineering staff review each answer and optimize your answers for keywords valuable to your specialty. It is a well kept secret that doctors (you) - not SEO consultants - are the ones who have the most valuable content prized by search engines. Ask DoctorBase "unlocks and optimizes" your content in the most efficient manner possible with today's technology.
  4. Finally, the doctor who provides the most popular answer - "the Featured Answer," gets an added benefit by allowing patients to write rave reviews about your expertise - reviews that are submitted to both Google and Google Local through our Preferred Data Provider relationship.

Thumb injury

My daughter fell and her scooter landed on her thumb it went very swollen and she was unable to move it straight after it so took her to a&e and they did a X-ray the doctor then said everything looks fine apart from one bit but he didn't think it was anything to worry about and sent us home now 5 days later she is still in pain, still a little swollen and can still hardly move it but when she does try to move it it's now making a clicking sound. Should I be worried?

based upon how old your daughter is, it may be difficult to see fractures through growth plates. Since she is still painful after 5 days, it is advisable to see a hand specialist or orthopedic surgeon

A thumb that is significantly swollen and still painful may have a serious injury. I would see an orthopedic hand specialist quickly to review the xrays and determine if further treatment is needed.

I recommend seeing a hand specialist soon. Hand injuries are very complex to diagnose and to treat and therefore seeing a specialist is crucial

I would be very surprised if your daughter did not have a fracture. The good news is there is a lot of leeway in treating the probable fracture. The bad news is that these fractures heal pretty quickly in children. I would recommend that you see a hand surgeon as soon as possible.

Yes. You need to see an Orthopaedic surgeon, preferabably a pediatric Ortho surgeon or hand surgeon. The clicking could be a small fragment fracture.

X-rays on children must be read very carefully. Subtle fractures can be missed easily due to the presence of epiphyseal plates (growth plates).

Clicking following an injury may represent an early "trigger thumb". This happens when the tendon swells and clicks within the sheath.

These issues may spontaneously resolve. Children are very resilient. They can bounce back from many injuries, but close follow up is important
If it hurts when you press in what is called the "anatomical snuff box" which is located between the base of the thumb and the wrist then she should be seen by an ortho surgeon. There can be a break in this area that does not show up well/at all on standard XR and presents with continued pain like you describe. Hope that helps.
The thumb joint is crucial towards active human function and can lead to possible disability if not addressed properly. I too have injured a thumb and several fingers. After caring for it myself with chiropractic adjustment, heat, ice, enzyme cream, stretching, 3rd class laser, 4th class laser to no avail; I flew out to Iowa to a former Instructor who diagnosised and referred me to a practitioner in Florida where I practice.

In 2 weeks I was much better than my efforts over 9 months! You need to find someone in your area that does ART (http://www.activerelease.com/)

Speaking from experience, I had the same thing happen to me... Sometimes, that clicking sound is just caused from non-exercise of that thumb. I never went to a doctor, but it is usually because of unexercise. Just wait for a more sophiscated answer than taking my advice right away.
