Last week I had a sore gym area in a very defined area. The next morning my throat was swollen and I had several canker sores. A few days I felt very run down and may have been running a fever. The sore gums and canker sores have persisted. I went to the dentist and he prescribed a mouth wash w/ disenfectant and a topical cream for the ulcers. Is there anything else I should do?

Dear Sir,
If your symptoms do not improve within 7-10 days with mouth rinse you should go back to your dentist to reevauate your situation and change the courrse of treatment if need be.
If you have multiple Ulcers generalized in the mouth most likely it could be Ulcerative mouth Stomatitis or if its specific to local area then it is diagnosed
Recurrent aphthous ulcers are treated using a variety of agents. These are directed at palliation of symptoms, shortening of healing time,[41, 42] and prophylaxis against future episodes. Many of the treatments are used without research demonstrating therapeutic results specific to aphthous stomatitis. Many episodes can be prevented by avoidance of common triggers such as walnuts and pineapple.
Topical regimens may include the following:
Anti-inflammatory (eg, corticosteroids) and immunomodulatory agents (eg, retinoids, cyclosporin) are used initially. These may include topical gels, creams, pastes, ointments, sprays, and rinses.
Adjuvant rinses reduce bacterial load, which is thought to reduce inflammation and shorten healing. These may include chlorhexidine gluconate, dilute hydrogen peroxide, and topical lidocaine or benzocaine.
An oral bioadherent (Gelclair) is a mucoadhesive that provides a protective coating to reduce pain.

Yes! After the antibiotic course, you should be scheduled for a review followed by scaling and polishing at regular intervals.
In most cases, canker sores do not require any treatment. If a person already has a canker sore, there are steps that can be taken to help relieve the pain or irritation caused by the sore and speed healing:
Avoid acidic foods such as citrus fruits or spicy foods that may aggravate the sore
Brush teeth gently and use a brush with soft bristles.

We use a Gingival Laser on areas like the palatal zone that appears on your photo. It provides immediate relief and sterilizes the virus instantaneously. There are drawbacks in your case of the extended lesions (not visible) on the throat area. This area is the ENT specialist area if these other remedies provided do not work. They all provide great advise.
ANUG or acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis has similar symptoms that you possess. The gingiva around other teeth either need perio cleaning or it may be the initial stages of ANUG. Some of the causes are :
•Lack of dental care
•Poor dental hygiene
•Poor diet
•Vitamin deficiencies
•Infections in the throat, teeth, or mouth
•A weak immune system
•Smoking
•Stress
& lack of sleep
Again the photo appears to look like some of the beginning stages. We normally see during final exams in some college students.
If this is the case, some cures include:•Antibiotics to treat infection, Dental surgery (rarely), Regular dental cleanings, Changes in diet and less stress(haha).
Best of luck,

I have to agree with the others here. It sounds like you have a viral infection of the mouth, possibly Herpetic Stomatitis which tends to be quite painful and pyretic. Topical anesthetics may help soothe the ulcers, but I think a round of Acyclovir or Valcyclovir may help. A second opinion may help since you're asking what else should you do, inferring that the treatment wasn't enough. If you're not satisfied with the treatment recommendations seek another opinion, especially if the ulcers are still visible and active.
Very good questions, and very good answers and advice given. However, other influencing factors include the medications you take. These all are known to cause dry mouth. Proper hydration of the lining of the mouth is essential to maintain the protective natural barrier that it is designed to provide. Other factors include stress, amount and quality of sleep, diet, nutrition, acid re-flux, snoring, integrity of the immune system, life style, and more. The recommended remedy will sooth the symptoms but may not reduce the tendency to have it happen again. PerioSciences makes a line of excellent products from natural plant extracts that has helped many of my patients. You may also obtain some helpful information for a Naturopath or Homeopathic practationer.
It sounds like what you have is a viral infection of the mouth. I'm not sure what your dentist gave you but to decrease the pain of the ulcers triamcinolone acetone 0.2% in either a mouth rinse or ointment can help. A "Home remedy" that can take the soreness away temporarily is to rinse your mouth with Maalox or another stomach remedy. This will coat the sores and give temporary relief. This type of infection has a typical life of 10 to 14 days. Good luck!
Fisrt of all, thorogh exam. of affected gum areas should be done, including x-rays, to rule out tooth problem or gum disease, & should be gtreated appropriately.Swollen throat symptom, may be related to throat infection,You masy want to consult ENT doctor, you may need a course of antibiotics. Canker sores would last for about 10 days & would go away.Apply local meds along with mouthwash your dentist prescribed.
