Hello great contributing doctors! I am 24 and a nurse myself. My GYN is on vaca and no one will return my call. I have a question on a topic I can't seem to find much research on. After the birth of my son, I chose implanon as my contraceptive method. It is scheduled to be removed 9-5-14. I have never experienced any breakthrough bleeding in the past 3 years. For the past 2 weeks, I have bled heavily with only a two day break. Does it lose effectiveness before removal date?

Implanon due date
Upon insertion, your progesterone level will rise rapidly for the first 3 months and then gradually decrease over the next 3 year. The medication is still being released, but in your case, might have hit a threshold that is insufficient to suppress growth of the endometrial lining. The good news is that you did so well with the Implanon, you could just have it exchanged as soon as your GYN shows up again.
I'm not sure, but it does sound suspicious. I would call the company hotline and speak to one of their scientific staff. I would you condoms until you get answers, or get it replaced.
