Sleep too long

I am a female postgraduate from Northwest University in Xiaan, China. I take two kind of pills called fluoxertine hydrochloride tablets and buspirone hydrochloride tablets, which is prescribed by psychiatrist in China. Did the psychiatrist gave the correct diagnosis? I just worry about my school achievement and want to be better at university. Now the problem is that I sleep too long, about 12 hours per day. Do I have a sleep problem or it's just because I am a lazy girl ?

You certainly don't sound lazy. You do sound like you could have anxiety and depression, and if that's the case it does sound like your doctor is treating you correctly. I would also consider counseling and aerobic exercise.

Good luck with school. But, do remember some things are more important than school, such as your health and well being!

fluoxitene (Prozac) is prescribed for anxiety and depressive disorders. buspirone (BuSpar) is prescribed for general anxiety disorder and occasionally as an augmentation strategy for depression. Sleeping too much can be a syptom of depression. Accurate diagnosis requires psychiatric evaluation. There is now genetic testing available that can assist in determining the medications most likely to be effective or cause side effects.

Modafinil is a great alternative!

If you would be really lazy you wouldn't even know it, let alone to admit it! If you can manage, you can take:

Tab. Modafinil (400mg)

½ +½+0, in empty stomach (at least for half an hour before or after your meal) for 8 days, then,

1+1+0, in empty stomach (at least for half an hour before or after your meal) for 1 month, then take this on demand basis!

Very possibly the medication is making you sleep more than you want too. Most people worry about their school achievement and want to be better students. Is the medication working? Are you less anxious? If so the medication is working. If you are unhappy with your amount of sleep, talk to your psychiatrist and ask if the prescribed amount may be reduced to discourage you from sleeping so much.
You are not lazy, you are working very diligently on your school achievement. Talk to your Psychiatrist about reducing the meds. Believe in yourself and go towards what you want. Do not concern yourself with other people's problems

Your problem appears to be uncontrolled anxiety caused by exsseive worry, high expectations , and obsessive thinking. Generally the more you complain to a doctor about a problem the higher the dosage they will go, and or another medication will be added until the complaints stop.

Psychiatrists often don't consider a persons need to function as equally important as symptom reduction. Get yourself to a cognitive behavioral psychologist to help you learn non pharmaceutical ways to control your anxiety.

i suppose by obsession he may have been describing OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). this means something like being overly concerned with details. fluoxetine is an appropriate medication for that. but is possibly the reason for your sedation. those drugs can be an appropriate combination but if your sedation started after beginning treatment....maybe one of the meds is the cause.

no successful drug treatment for your second diagnosis and i doubt you are a bigot anyway:).

i also have a hard time believing you are lazy.
Without a proper assessment it would be hard to determine what the initial cause of excessive sleeping and feeling tired there are many things to consider such as your sleeping pattern when did you notice a change in the pattern of sleep. Proper dieting ect I would definitely recommend counseling there is a possibility the dose could be to high in your case but test would have to be done such a CBC the med could also be interacting with your thyroid.

I'm not a doctor, but I have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Without treating you I am just going to give my opinion based on what I have learned about the medications you are taking and alternative medicines that are available.

Both medicines you're taking cause somnolence (sleepiness). The fluoxertine is in a group of antidepressants called SSRI's. Out of all the SSRI's fluoxertine is the least likely to cause drowsiness and sleepiness. You may want to look at switching antidepressants to one that isn't an SSRI. Switching to another SSRI will almost certainly not give you different results. There are a couple other groups of antidepressants available such as SNRI's (Effexor is a good example of one), tricyclic (Elavil is a good example), and ones that don't fit into groups such as Wellbutrin.

As for the buspirone, more than 10% of all patients who take it experience sleepiness/drowsiness. The advantage of taking buspirone for anxiety over most anxiety medication is it is not addictive or habit forming for most. It does not have any recreational value. There are other options available for you to treat your anxiety so that you can steer clear of medications that will make you dependent on them. A great example is certain blood pressure medication such as metoprolol. It isn't right for everyone such as people with low blood pressure. But it

is definitely something to discuss with your doctor if buspirone worked for you. Blood pressure medication won't leave you drowsy like traditional anxiety medication will, which is what you want to avoid.
