  1. Ask DoctorBase is a free service for patients on the DoctorBase platform - currently servicing over 6 million American patients of record.
  2. All answers submitted by healthcare professionals (you) are for entertainment purposes only and do not constitute doctor-patient relationships. All patients must agree to this before using Ask DoctorBase.
  3. Our software and our Marketing Engineering staff review each answer and optimize your answers for keywords valuable to your specialty. It is a well kept secret that doctors (you) - not SEO consultants - are the ones who have the most valuable content prized by search engines. Ask DoctorBase "unlocks and optimizes" your content in the most efficient manner possible with today's technology.
  4. Finally, the doctor who provides the most popular answer - "the Featured Answer," gets an added benefit by allowing patients to write rave reviews about your expertise - reviews that are submitted to both Google and Google Local through our Preferred Data Provider relationship.

I had injections in my buttocks for augmentation 2 years ago. I now know this is illegal. I want to get checked out. What should I do?

Please make an appointment with a local, american board certified plastic surgeon for evaluation.

Buttock injections can lead to infection and scarring. Fortunately, these are minor issues compared to embolic phenomenon which can be fatal. Consulting with a plastic surgeon who performs buttock contouring and buttock lifts may be necessary to determine any risk and any needed advice regarding illegal buttock injection side effects. Typically, if there are no issues at this point, observation may be the only thing needed, as well as education on the dangers of illegal injections.

You should consult with a board certified plastic surgeon in your area and have him/her take a good look at everything. Unfortunately there may be no way to tell exactly what was injected into you. Hopefully it was not a very large volume and hopefully you do not have any serious problems. Having said that, you should be on the look out for increased redness, pain, and swelling. If any of that is occurring you should seek medical attention ASAP as it could be an indication of an infection. Untreated these infections can be very serious and potentially debilitating.

You could attempt to contact your physician who injected you and inquire about what specifically was injected. If you are having symptoms such as pain or swelling you may need to have the foreign material removed. You can consult with an experienced plastic surgeon or dermatologist in your area.

Free silicone injection into the buttocks unfortunately is still being performed. The good news is that it is injected so deep, that extrusion, is usually not a problem, at least for the first decade following injection. Unfortunately, as you get older, you can expect the silicone material to extrude in a cyst like fashion.

You should have the area evaluated by a plastic and reconstructive surgeon.

Buttock injections can cause some serious problems. If you survived these without complications, consider yourself lucky. Wouldn't recommend you do them again. If you want your buttocks bigger, best to check with your cosmetic surgeon. We offer fat injections and buttock implants to enhance your buttocks.

I have seen buttock augmentation patients who have had the procedure done both legally and "illegally". Implants are generally used for the legitimate procedure. Injections are generally used when the augmentation is performed by non-physicians. Free silicone injections risk encapsulation, granulation, infection, and/extrusion.

You may be currently asymptomatic, but it would be a good idea to have a board certified plastic surgeon evaluate your results. Good luck!
More likely it is silicone that was injected...Medical grade silicone is NOT available in the USA for buttock augmentation...Please consult with A BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON for your situation

See a board certified plastic surgeon and bring all of your records and details about your prior surgery with you to the consultation.
