There may be a few factors at play here, but the primary one would be poor circulation. How much are you exercising? Are your blood sugars elevated? Do you eat a diet with good sources of Vitamin K such as green leafy vegetables? Are you taking a good anti-inflammatory fish oil? Any one of these ideas might be a good place to start. If it's only one ankle, I would also see your doctor as soon as possible to rule out another clot.

call the physician who treated your leg for the initial clot, or see a vascular specialist and get an ultrasound exam.

Then devise a plan for prevention which will probably include custom fitted compression hose

Given your history of a blood clot, you should see a vein specialist to be sure there is noting more serious present. Compression stockings could be considered, but it would be much safer to have a new medical evaluation first before using them. You probably need an ultrasound exam of the legs to check to see there is no new clot forming plus to see whether the valves in the veins of the leg are working properly to keep the blood in the veins flowing back up to the heart. If the vein specialist confirms that this is not truly a vein or other circulation issue, then you may need to see a podiatrist to evaluate for some other type of foot or ankle problem.

Given your history of blood clots and this recent onset of symptoms - I suggest that you seek medical attention sooner rather than later. Your doctor will help dictate which treatment would be best to do at home (if warranted). It may be something minor like phlebitis (inflammation of the veins) or as severe as another clot. Please see a doctor soon.

This could be simple inflammation, a clotting or other venous problem, or even a possible infectious process. You should seek proper medical attention as soon as possible.

Some things that may help: Keep feet elevated when relaxing as much as possible. Always where comfortable shoes. Don't wear too tight of socks. The herb Hawthorn is very good for vein support.

If it really bothers you, I would suggest going to see a vein specialist, especially if it is sore to the touch. That is not normal. If you previously had a clot, I wouldn't wait too long to have these veins checked out.

Prompt medical attention is warranted in a case such as yours, particularly with the prior history of a blood clot. You may require noninvasive vascular testing to determine the source of symptoms. The other suggestions by previous responders are also worth heeding.

Rest, elevation and moist heat. See your doctor.

Since you've had a clot previously, I would suggest that you get to your physician's or naturopath's office for evaluation and make sure you are not having any other clot issues. Reducing inflammation can be as easy as adding certain herbs and spices into your diet to work on inflammation or you could even make a poultice and wrap it around your leg.
