Read book Wheat Belly. Stop completely all wheat and most all sugar. Will likely go away quickly...10 lb/month is typical.

Have you had your thyroid (including reverse T3) and hormones (estrogen, progesterone, cortisol) checked?

Also, you may need to look into your diet. Cutting out sugar and refined carbohydrates may help.

Sometimes food sensitivities can also cause whole body inflammation and promote fat retention.

As women age, weight management does become an issue as hormones fluctuate and metabolism changes.

With weight accumulated around the abdomen, there are a few things to think about:

1) Blood Sugar - It is important to have a fasting glucose test, insulin, and Hgb A1C as central fat is more associated with pre-diabetes and diabetes

2) Cortisol - When our stress hormone, cortisol, is elevated, we tend to hold on to abdominal fat more. There are plenty of herbs that help regulate cortisol.

3) Hormones (Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone) - With hormone fluctuations, our body can hold onto more fat. If you are experiencing any changes in sleep, hot flashes, night sweats, it definitely helps to get evaluated. From there you can consider, herbal hormonal support or bio-identical hormones.

4) Digestive Issues - Imbalances in gut bacteria can cause people to retain weight due to a compromise in the body's ability to absorb nutrients. If your body isn't absorbing optimally, your body may feel hungry and not let go of fat.

You should see your doctor to have your blood pressure checked and to make sure you do not have a problem with your blood sugar. WIth prediabetes or insulin resistance we tend to store more fat in the belly area. Also, with high stress, there can be more fat stored in the abdominal area. This fat is associated with a higher risk of chronic disease. You want to take steps to lose this excess weight.

The best thing is to find the cause. For women in their 40s and 50s, there are a lot of hormonal changes going on, especially if you have a lot of stress in your life. There is no magic pill for fat/weight loss other than eating right, exercising and stress management. So, if you've already tried those things and you are still finding it difficult to lose weight, I highly recommend seeing a licensed naturopathic physician to see if hormones or gut issues are playing a part. You can find one near you atwww.naturopathic.org.

Belly fat is caused by high CHO diet, high stress hormone (cortisol), sex hormone imbalance (progesterone, estrogen and testosterone) as in peri-menopause. A total lifestyle change is warranted with nutrition, stress management, and exercise.

It is hard to suggest without an examination and testing, but fat around belly is usually due to estrogen dominance, which means that your estrogens are too high for your progesterone. The other cause may be overproduction of cortisol.

Both conditions have many other symptoms to consider e.g breast tenderness, water retention, tearfullness, pessimism, overempathy, etc.

The best way to handle it is to check hormones and be consulted by hormone optimization specialist.
