Herbal supplements & Multi-vitamins

I wanted to boost my immune system so I decided to take herbal supplements. I purchased finest nutrition resveratrol, acai, and turmeric. I purchased mason natural garlic oil (from garlic bulbs), natures way echinacea, and One A Day Men's multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplement. I have been taking all by following the instructions. Today I purchased Okinawa Life Immunisol which has Shiitake Mushroom (Lentinula Edodes) mycelia extract. I haven't taken this one yet. Am I harming myself if take all?

You need to consult with a naturopathic physician who can assess your health properly and advise accordingly.

These are well researched for immune system building/ support. There is a Chinese medicine thought around the Zheng of the formula or direction. We in the west go for the shot gun approach, rather than a balanced directional 'nudge' as I like to explain to my patients. You probably won't hurt yourself, though you may want to see a practioner to get the 'right' formula for you.

Hello,

It might be A little much. Il you are already in good health maybe just shiitake ou turmeric would be sufficient. If you want to be sure, go see a naturopath or traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. They would guide you properly. If you get colds often then there is deeper work to be done.

Good luck,

Thank you everyone for your responses. I never heard of a naturopathic physician, I will definitely look into that and see if there is one in the Florida area. I am somewhat healthy I would say. I hardly ever get sick with the cold or the flu. If I ever do I usually get over it very quickly. To be honest I can't remember the last time I ever came down with the flu. I am 5 feet 9 inch and weigh 213.2 pounds, so I could probably lose some weight which I am working on. The only health condition I have is HPV, which I got from my girlfriend 2 years ago. She was diagnose with it and since we are together in a intimate relationship, I obviously have it. For a year or two now she has been clear of HPV after several pap smear tests. I have read that after couple of years your immune system eventually fights off the virus completely and/or keeps it dormant. I have also read that having a strong immune system can increase the probability that your body kills off the virus. So that is why I was looking at taking herbal supplements plus a multivitamin supplement to boost my immune system.

As a physician Board certified in Clinical nutrition I can promise you that mot only could you be damaging yourself or at least be ineffective, but you are also wasting a lot of money.

I could read a lot of books about cars and even watch youtube videos, that doesn't ,ean I should fix my car, my Mechanic should who has the training.

The Only Doctors I would recommend you see, and I recommend you stop trying to be the Doctor yourself, is an ND or a Doctor with Nutritional training like a FMD.

When taking herbal supplements it is best to start off with one or two pertinent ones. Essiac four herb tea is a great immune system builder and tonic. Echinacea is also good for the immune system, however it should not be taken longer than three months. Herbal supplements are safe when taken in small doses initially, and then gradually increasing while under the supervision of a practitioner.

ALL OF THE SUPPLEMENTS YOU HAVE MENTIONED ARE GOOD SOURCES OF DIFFIRENT TYPES OF NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS. HOWEVER, YOU MIGHT WANT TO GET A LITTLE MORE SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT YOUR BODY IS SHOWING SIGNS OF NEEDING. YOU WOULD ALSO WANT TO CHECK ON THE ABSORPTION OF THE NUTRIENTS. LASTLY, IN MY OPINION, IT WOULD BE RARE FOR YOUR BODY TO NEED ANY OF THIS, AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 28. YOU COULD EASILY GO ANOTHER 10 YEARS BEFORE TAKING SUPPLEMENTS.

Greetings.

There is much to say about what you wrote.

First, there is a difference in just wanting to take a bunch of supplements and asking if they will harm you. Supplements and herbs can be harmful to anyone. How they work in someone's body differs person to person.

Second, I do not know you or your medical history. Therefore to say anything you eat, drink, or etc, is harmful or not harmful, would be unethical of me to say definitively in anyway.

I apologize if this sounds bleak or is not the answer you are looking for. I take my clients health very seriously. You may ask how does it differ person to person. Here are some examples that you can research for yourself if you so desire.

Did you know that if you are on blood pressure medicines you should not be eating licorice or grapefruit, especially at the same time you take your medicine? This is an example of FOOD! Who knew food could be hazardous to one's health especially fruits and spices?

If one is on antidepressant medication, one should not consume St. John's Wart.

Dear sir your question is complex. Also without knowing all the specific ingredients in a product I cannot give you an answer either.

I would speak with your medical doctor before changing your diet, r starting any exercise regime. I encourage all my clients to do this. If you would like to contact me to set up an appointment, you may do so.

I can share this:

Every year new studies are released regarding vitamins and supplements. Sometime the FDA will even ban a medicine, supplement, or vitamin.

Generally, the current information shares that Garlic is good for our immune systems. Echinacea should only be taken for 3 days at the onset of feeling sick. Echinacea may be hard for the liver to digest and linger in the body longer. As for mushrooms some are safe but for some people some are not. I am allergic to them for example. See I do not know you, so I cannot tell you if taking all these supplements will "harm you" individually. What is safe for one person is not always universally safe for everyone.

My goal for all my clients is to get them off as many supplements and etc. as possible, while working with their medical doctors for liver testing, observations, and various other blood work.

The best way to boost your immune system is to take care of you gut as 80% of your immune system (or your "second brain") is in your gut. Then eat right, sleep well, exercise correctly, and go to the bathroom on a regular basis. I will often say that most of us can benefit from 3 supplements:

1.) Pre / Probiotic

2.) Enzymes

3.) A good plant based multivitamin

The best thing to do is research for yourself based on your own allergies and etc., foods that contain what you are looking for in your supplementation. Supplements are just that, Supplements. they should not be used as replacements unless you are under the care of a physician advising you to do so. We should eat as much good food and drink properly, as we can and then "supplement" the our meals with nutrients missing in our diets.

I hope this helps. Please contact me for an appointment if you need more information.
I think the appropriate question is not whether taking all the supplements you named is harmful; the true question is, do you need them? No they are not harmful when taken together, and as you mentioned according to the label instructions. However, the instructions on the label are there only for patient guidance; so you don't harm yourself. Your healthcare provider may have other suggestions that are specific to their laboratory findings for your unique physiology. Have you seen a Natural Medicine physician to have laboratory evaluations of your blood, urine, or saliva? It may be very beneficial to establish a base line and really define what is absolutely necessary for you. Doc Wah
