I'm sorry to hear that you're having a problem. There are many things as the other doctors have mentioned that could be causing your problem. There is a good chance it could be related to anterior impingement syndrome which can be caused by soft tissue inflammation and or a bone spur. There are also neurologic abnormalities that may lead to this pain including local causes but not excluding something going on in your lower back or hip area. I would highly recommend having this checked out by foot and ankle specialists in your area to determine a more accurate diagnosis.

It may be an injury to the Superficial peroneal nerve, which comes into the foot from the ankle.

Might be nerve pain.

Patient needs to see a foot and ankle specialist to rule out the etiology of the pain. He or she will perform a detailed clinical exam and some tests to rule in/out the possible diagnosis.

To assess this complaint I would need to see the patient, take a history of the symptoms, take X-rays and do an exam of the foot and ankle to arrive at a diagnosis.

Ask your Pcp to check your sugar, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Vitamin D levels, as well as Thyroid Gland (TSH, Free T3, T4, TPO, THyroglobulin Antibody). Nerve Conduction Study is very uncomfortable for the patient, but this is the test that can give you the answer, if your symptoms are really cumbersome. Seeing Foot Specialist may help, if the issue is in the feet bones imbalance. Good luck.

Most common reason is an injury to the intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve. This can be caused by and ankle sprain, the position of the eyelets of shoes, or direct trauma to the area.

A positive Tinel's sign (shooting nerve pain) when apply pressure to the nerve will confirm it. This can be done by your podiatrist.

In the absence of this, then an examination is necessary to find the cause of the neuropathy (nerve damage) whether it is caused by compression to another part of the nerve, or some metabolic (medical disease).

Treatment is directed at the cause of the condition. There are ways to make the intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve heal very quickly, which also requires a visit to your podiatrist.

The question is not very informative to make a response. Many things can be wrong. Patient should see his/her family physician to make a diagnosis.

I am sorry you are having pain and please know we will do everything to get you better. The amazing thing about our feet is so many different things can cause Ankle pain and pain to the top of your feet. My best advice is to have this evaluated before it gets worse. I feel a Podiatrist in your area is the best place to go first

Like others have responded, this "nerve pain" could be a variety of issues. Local nerve entrapments on the top of the foot are not unusual. A nerve entrapment, or inflammation, could radiate, as may occur with a neuroma, for instance. Pain that occurs secondary may be strictly be a result of compensating for the original problem. A thorough history, as well as local exam is the first step toward getting you better. Hope you feel better soon.
