My girlfriend (48) has missed a period and is concerned. I had a vasectomy several years ago; she is on birth control but has not had actual intercourse in several years. We were wondering if it were possible for her to be late (1 week) if she suddenly started having intercourse after several years of not? She has not changed weight, doesn't do drugs/alcohol, but has had some stress at work. She hasn't shown any symptoms of pre-menopause that we can see. Neither of us have any STD's.

Missed Period, Not pregnant
Stress and perimenopause could be role players. If she smokes, this can also contribute to early onset of menopause. For example, if she was genetically programmed to have a menopause in her 53 years, she will have it at her 49-51, if she smokes (i.e., 2-4 years earlier).
The average age of menopause is 51 in the United States; commonly, most women experience onset between the ages of 40 and 60. Early menopause usually refers to cases where onset occurs before the age of 40.

The frequency of prior sexual intercourse is not relevant. Vasectomies are not perfect, but if you've had that AND your girlfriend in taking drugs for contraception, chances of pregnancy are slim. By the way, premenopause should not have any symptoms other than cessation of period (which will not happen anyway if she's on the pill).
