I only had an hour-long period a day before my period was scheduled and it never came back for the few days after. It was bright red spotting with cramps. I am worried what is going on - please help me diagnose this.

Short period
I think we need a little more information to make the correct diagnosis, but your intuitions may be correct. Emotional turmoil and stress can certainly affect your menstrual cycle. But you dont want to be surprised by pregnancy, so I would have you do a quick home pregnancy test. If its negative and you still have no period next cycle, I'd repeat it and go see your regular MD.
There are multiple things that could be happening here, I would get a pregnancy test first. If that is negative, I would keep track of your cycles for a few months and see if the pattern is changing . This could just be the stress you are under or it could be that you ovulated late this cycle.
You have a hormonal imbalance, probably caused by stress. Periods should be every 28 days. Moving countries will surely mess up your thyroid, which controls your period. I wouldn't worry about it if you had a stress that you know about. However, if you were stressed for no reason then we have to manage the hormones. It's nor normal to be emotional with your cycle. If that persists, contact an acupuncturist or homeopath. Until then, please follow the following:
'Want a quick and easy way to start balancing your hormones? Whether it's PMS, infertility, headaches, cramps or plain grumpiness, this simple addition to your day has been shown to help all of these! From day one of your period (the first day you bleed), take 2 TBSP of GROUND flax/chia/pumpkin seeds. Choose any seed you like, but be sure to grind them first. Flax seeds are conveniently sold ground already. Then, 2 weeks later (15 days from start of bleeding), switch to ground sunflower or sesame seeds. If your period is very irregular, you can use the moon cycle: day 1 of the month is the new moon. Then, on the full moon switch to sunflower/sesame seeds. The flax/chia/pumpkin seeds contain oils and compounds that support estrogen, and the other seeds support progesterone, right when we need it. Because this is very powerful, do not use this if you are using any kind of hormonal contraception. Do not use if you are allergic to any of these seeds. You can start this any day of your cycle. There is no need to wait until day 1.'
