  1. Ask DoctorBase is a free service for patients on the DoctorBase platform - currently servicing over 6 million American patients of record.
  2. All answers submitted by healthcare professionals (you) are for entertainment purposes only and do not constitute doctor-patient relationships. All patients must agree to this before using Ask DoctorBase.
  3. Our software and our Marketing Engineering staff review each answer and optimize your answers for keywords valuable to your specialty. It is a well kept secret that doctors (you) - not SEO consultants - are the ones who have the most valuable content prized by search engines. Ask DoctorBase "unlocks and optimizes" your content in the most efficient manner possible with today's technology.
  4. Finally, the doctor who provides the most popular answer - "the Featured Answer," gets an added benefit by allowing patients to write rave reviews about your expertise - reviews that are submitted to both Google and Google Local through our Preferred Data Provider relationship.

Viral infection/Ankle Pain

My 4 year old was diagnosed 3 days ago with a viral infection. She has now been fever free for 48 hours but she woke up this morning and won't walk- she is complaining of ankle pain. Is this common?

Not uncommon.

Could be a condition termed " toxic synovitis"

This complaint of ankle pain and refusal to walk is uncommon, but not rare. Although there can be cause that is not dangerous to your child, it needs to be evaluated by your pediatrician to be sure. It is possible that this complaint is completely unrelated to the previous fever. It may simply be a sprain or strain from normal 4 year old playful ankle injury. On the other hand, it could be an early joint or bone infection. It can also be simply an accumulation of mild fluid in the joint from the previous illness. Many possibilities. What is certain is that your child's refusal to walk clearly indicates more than mild discomfort and needs a doctor's evaluation. You would be wise to leave the internet and go to the office. Best regards.

Toxic synovitis is a self-limited joint disturbance that frequently follows viral syndromes. The pain and limp go away in a few days, occasionally in 2 weeks. It is the most common cause of the scenario you have described. However, there are several rare but very serious illnesses that can cause the limp. I would encourage you to see your daughter's doctor to rule those out. Go immediately if there is redness, heat or significant swelling at her ankle.
Although pediatrics is not my specialty this would not be common and I would recommend having her seen by her pediatrician today as a start. Persistent fever is more indicative of ongoing infection and should be evaluated by her pediatrician and your PCP. Unclear if the two separate issues are related but could be sorted out at the doctors office. Thanks.
