Intermittent testicular swelling and intermittent dull ache.

Dear Doctor,

I am an 18 year old male. My left testicle swells up periodically, and sometimes I feel a dull ache (not necessarily coinciding with the swelling of the testicle). Examination of the testicle (regardless of whether it is swollen or normal) is painless. What could be the cause of this? Obviously one immediately jumps to the worst case scenario, and I would appreciate some piece of mind.
