Is invisalign at the same level as braces?

My daughter has heard about invisalign and wants to choose this option over braces. I am worried this is not worth the time and money.

Invisalign is a form of tooth movement that has advantages and disadvantages. Explore your child's exact needs with a board certified orthodontist before proceding. Basically, it depends on the problem you child has as to whether it would respond as well to invisalign as to traditional braces.

Excellent results can be expected with Invisalign treatment. As with any technique in Orthodontics, a lot of the success has to do with the expertise of the Orthodontist in the technique and the compliance of the patient. With Invisalign, total cooperation wearing the appliances is a vital factor in the final outcome. Your child must be completely on boardwith the decision and understand the commitment otherwise an alternative treatment will need to be considered.

Invisalign can often be as effective as braces as long as multiple extractions are not needed. Invisalign should not be thought of as a product that is the same no matter where you purchase it. Just like braces it is simply a tool used to align teeth, and it's greatest limitation is the doctors ability or lack there of. Any dentist can legally provide invisalign treatment, but only an orthodontist is a specialist who has 2-3 additional years of training in orthodontics.

With Invisalign a lot more responsibility is put on the patient. Braces are attached to the teeth, so that we know they will be worn. Invisalign needs to be in place for 22-23 hours/day. Who do you want to be responsible for this, your daughter or your orthodontist?

For most cases the answer is yes. In fact there are some cases that Invisalign may be MORE effective than braces. The only way to be sure is to have an evaluation by an orthodontist. They would see if Invisalign was an option and if so, is it as effective as conventional braces. Good luck!

I would agree. For a teen, definitely not worth the extra $1,000 (and this is coming from an invisalign preferred provider!). great product for adults. issues with teens include compliance (must wear 23 hours a day), lost aligners and cost that really is not necessary as there is no stigma to teens for wearing braces. The answers to the contrary (80% use with teens) are what I'd call invisalign shops-- everyone or nearly everyone becomes an invisalign patient as it makes them more profit (as it does us-- but we like to suggest the best options, not the most profitable for us). stick with traditional braces for your kid.

Invisalign is definitely an option for your teenage daughter. We treat over 80% of our teenage patients with Invisalign in our practices with great success. It is important however, to seek a consultation with an Orthodontist that specializes in Invisalign Teen. You find a specialist in your area by going toinvisalign.com" target="_blank">www.invisalign.com and putting your zip code into their doctor locator.

Invisalign can be used, but in very limited bite corrections. A full diagnosis, including orthodontic records, should be done

prior to the decision being made. Also, options to use invisalign or standard brackets and bands, disadvantages and advantages, should be explained to you before you make the decision.

That's a great question.

Invisalign certainly has some real value for some minor or limited movement situations. If the patient has some significant crowding or by problems however, conventional braces is typically more predictable ways to go.

In treating kids and adults with both braces and Invisalign for many years, we are able to achieve great results with both, but it really important to understand the limitations of Invisalign.

What I would recommend is to come in for a free consultation appointment and we can discuss both options, advantages and disadvantages of each, and length of treatment. If braces seem to make more sense for treatment, we have beautiful esthetic, ceramic braces? Most of the time the cost of treatment between Invisalign and Braces is pretty similar.

Look forward to seeing you and your daughter,

Hope that answered your question :)

I am a Invisalign provider and will tell you it has a definite role in our orthodontic treatment of patients. It is NOT for everyone and the decision whether to use it or not should be done by the treating specialist. I have been extremely happy with all the results I have obtained with Invisalign and its little brother, Realine. A lot depends on the severity of the orthodontic issue and how compliant the patient is with wearing removable appliances. We also make our decision off of how well the patient practices oral hygiene. I prefer that traditional braces not be placed in patients that have active problems with dental caries or gum disease. Consult your specialist! Thanks! And good luck!
