  1. Ask DoctorBase is a free service for patients on the DoctorBase platform - currently servicing over 6 million American patients of record.
  2. All answers submitted by healthcare professionals (you) are for entertainment purposes only and do not constitute doctor-patient relationships. All patients must agree to this before using Ask DoctorBase.
  3. Our software and our Marketing Engineering staff review each answer and optimize your answers for keywords valuable to your specialty. It is a well kept secret that doctors (you) - not SEO consultants - are the ones who have the most valuable content prized by search engines. Bladder troubles in young woman

I am 21 years old, a woman. I've had 2 children, vaginally. one 4 year old, one 16 month old. Lately, I've been having trouble controlling my bladder during exercise, or if I need to go, I can't hold it. I have to get up in the middle of the night at least 3 times to use the restroom. It was not a major issue until a few months ago... I do pelvic muscle exercises and everything. I'm afraid something could be wrong. Also sometimes, sex hurts...

You did not mention the birth weights of your children or whether or not you had vaginal deliveries or c-sections. If you have had big babies (8 lbs or more) vaginally you are at risk for genuine stress urinary incontinence (GSUI). The treatments for this condition are Kegel exercises (vaginal contractions to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles), physical therapy, placement of a pessary (a rubber/plastic device placed vaginally to support your bladder neck), and surgery. Most young women like yourself can be greatly helped by the first two therapies listed if the diagnosis is GSUI. I would start out by contacting your OB/Gyn. With regard to your additional complaint "sex hurts..." there are many reasons for painful intercourse and another reason to make an appointment with your OB/Gyn the second complaint may or may not be related to your first complaint. Good luck.
You probably have POP - Pelvic organ prolapse- and you should have this evaluated by an ob/gyn - and more specifically an Urogynecologist.
