White lines across the skin of the big toe could be do to dryness. Another possibility could be a condition known as Lichen Planus. This is caused by rubbing against a shoe. I would try vaseline twice a day or any cream. If the lines don't resolve after few weeks then see your podiatist or dermatologist for a definitive diagnosis. .

I am assuming you are talking about the toenails? There is a type of fungal infection that can cause superficial white patches, sometimes white lines, on the top of the toenails. It is most commonly called WHITE SUPERFICIAL ONYCHOMYCOSIS. While it is not the only type of fungus infection in the nail, it is often easier to treat than cases where the nail becomes very thick and hard to cut. Topical medicines often work better for this type of fungus infection than other types because they do not have to work as hard to get though the nail. Often, some of the white discolored area can be filed off or smoothed down with a sanding disk.

White horizontal lines on the toe are generally the result of trauma to the nail (isolated injury for one line, multiple lines for repetitive trauma). Tight or poor-fitting shoes may be the cause with repetitive trauma. Lines which are parallel to the toe may be from an old, previous trauma indicating damage to the nail (if they run the full length of the nail) or the starting of a nail fungus if it is just a portion of the nail. Rarely, nutritional problems such as vitamin deficiencies can be a cause. If the lines are not progressively growing out to the end of the toe and other causes are eliminated, then I would suggest an evaluation by a board-certified podiatrist.

white lines can be normal. As long as there are no changes in the nail texture or thickness, don't worry about it. If there are changes, Vicks' Vapo Rub works as well as anything for vungus in the nails.

Could be fungus or could be damage from your nail polish.

This condition may either be a temporary condition that grows out, or a permanent one, due to damage to the area from which the nail grows, called the matrix. It also could be a condition called leukonycia. You should have this addressed by your podiatrist or dermatologist, in the unlikely possibliity of a skin cancer.

If the lines you refer to run left to right as opposed to proximal to distal, they are usually caused by a temporary interruption in the normal growth pattern of the nail plate. The most common cause of this is a one time trauma, such as impact with an object or most typically wearing a shoe that a little tight for and event. Normally this line will gradually grow out distally but a small ripple in the nail plate may also be evident over time.

Most commonly these white lines can be a result of superficial fungus on the nail. It is best to get these evaluated first and then if need be debrided from the nail plate as they can lead to the nail becoming further damaged. This is usually easy to do with a nail file or your doctor may use a rotary type burr. Remember to let the nail breathe and not cover with polish for long periods as this can occlude the nail and lead to the areas becoming worse. Tea tree oil or coconut oil are good homeopathic remedies to treating the areas of concern and will help to promote good nail health.

If it is on your skin and has not responded to moisturizers or ointments such as aquaphore or vaseline, see your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment. If it is on your toenail and and has not grown out such as an injury line than you may have another type of problem such as psoriasis or fungus. Your doctor can look at it and decide if any labs are needed or biopsy and treat it as well.
