  1. Ask DoctorBase is a free service for patients on the DoctorBase platform - currently servicing over 6 million American patients of record.
  2. All answers submitted by healthcare professionals (you) are for entertainment purposes only and do not constitute doctor-patient relationships. All patients must agree to this before using Ask DoctorBase.
  3. Our software and our Marketing Engineering staff review each answer and optimize your answers for keywords valuable to your specialty. It is a well kept secret that doctors (you) - not SEO consultants - are the ones who have the most valuable content prized by search engines. Ask DoctorBase "unlocks and optimizes" your content in the most efficient manner possible with today's technology.
  4. Finally, the doctor who provides the most popular answer - "the Featured Answer," gets an added benefit by allowing patients to write rave reviews about your expertise - reviews that are submitted to both Google and Google Local through our Preferred Data Provider relationship.

Sex during antibiotic treatment

I am currently on metronidazole 500mg for BV, and took a one time dose of azithromycin 4 days ago to treat chlamydia. Why does it say to abstain from sex both during treatment and for 7 days afterwards? What happens if you have sex during the antibiotic treatment? What happens if you have sex within 7 days of finishing the last pill of antibiotic treatment?

It usually takes 7 days for the medicine to take away the infection so if you have relations before the infection is gone, you may very well infect your partner. Follow-up involves repeating cultures for both you and your partner and re-treating if the infection is still present.
It is a matter of avoiding introduction of germs as well as resting the tissue

The chlamydia treatment requires you to abstain from intercourse since it takes 7-10 days to clear the infection. Even though you only take the medication for one day. Therefore, you could pass it on to your current partner. The metronidazole might not work as well for BV if you engage in intercourse during treatment, although it is not absolutely contraindicated. I would call your Ob/Gyns office to request another dose of azithromycin just to be safe. Also unless you used a condom your current partner needs tested as well.
