I see a lot of ads for both Restylane and Juvederm. Is one better than the other, and are either of them effective for treating the parentheses lines I have around my mouth?

I am a 42 year old caucasian woman with fair skin, no known allergies or rosacea issues.

These are both great products to soften the nasolabial folds (the parentheses lines around your mouth). I often prefer a thicker product for deeper folds - either Perlane or Juvederm Ultra Plus. These both now come pre-mixed with lidocaine for a more comfortable patient experience. Some patients may also benefit from adding volume to the cheeks as well. By volumizing the cheek, you also get softening of the nasolabial folds and a youthful, natural look.

They are essentially the same product different manufactures. Both can be used effectively to treat the areas you describe but you could also use a thicker formulation such as Perlane, Juvaderm Ultra Plus or Radiesse which would last longer

I prefer juvederm simply because I have used it often and have not had any adverse experience with it. To my knowledge, there is not one that is better than the others. Radiesse is also a filler that deserve consideration. This is a thick viscous material that persists for a longer period that the other fillers.

It is very effective at reducing very coarse furrows because it is more viscous (thicker) than the other fillers.

Both of these are excellent products and I believe each one has a specific role in every part of the face. Juvederm is preferred in the lips because it last longer and Juvederm Ultraplus is very good in the nasolabial folds for a more long-lasting effect. Juvederm Voluma is an excellent product to provide extra long lasting volume to the cheekbone region and hollowing of the face just below the cheekbone region. Juvederm is not suited for the tear trough region because it causes too much swelling. Restylane is an excellent filler for the tear trough region and the nose. Many patients achieve long-lasting results when Restylane is placed along the nasal dorsum and the nasal tip. The parentheses lines are tricky to fill and either of the aforementioned fillers can work however I prefer a filler called Bellafill which can be conservatively placed to avoid a large bubble deformity. Other fillers to consider include Radiesse and fat. Blunt cannulae needles decrease the possible complication of an intravascular injection. Simultaneous treatment with Botox or Dysport can enhance the effectiveness of the filler. Glabella lines and brow Lines and temporal hollowing can all be treated with the aforementioned fillers with meticulous injection principles and techniques.
Both are similar products made by different companies and are each HA products that last about a year and help soften the naolabial creases/folds "Parentheses lines". Voluma, by Allergan can last up to 2 years.

Both are effective and there is not much to distinguish between them for duration or ease of use. They are hyaluronic acid derived fillers. You can also use Radiesse, which is calcium hydroxylapetite microspheres that gradually dissolve over 6-12 months. Care must be taken to get the best results when injecting fillers to avoid injection-related complications, such as intra-vascular injection. I use tapered blunt-tipped injection cannulas that push the tissue away and are much less likely to penetrate a blood vessel and cause bruising then the needle injection technique.
Both fillers work well.
Restylane and Juvederm are both good dermal fillers. However they are used very differently.

Restylane is a much softer filler which only lasts a short time about 3 months. Restylane is malleable and less likely to cause lumps. Therefore it is used in the lips and by experts to fill depressions beneath the lower eyelid.

There is a new treatment for the nasolabial fold lines or parentheses around the mouth. In the past fillers were placed directly in the fold to camouflage them. However the problem that causes these parentheses around the mouth is sagging of the cheek which is caused by loss of fat or loss of volume in the cheek.

Today we re- volumize or add filler to plump the cheek, create the Apple cheek, which lifts the cheek and improves the nasolabial fold or parentheses around the mouth. A new form of Juvederm called Voluma is now the choice fto re-volumize the cheek and reducing the nasolabial fold lines. The benefits of this new filler are its soft malleability and most importantly the ability to last 2 years which is a longer affect than any other filler. Correction of the parentheses around the mouth-the Nasal Labial Fold Lines requires a more substantial filler that can actually lift the cheek and in addition to Voluma, Perlane and Radiesse are also acceptable for this use.
