Initially, when the child start on stimulants ( which is the most commonly used prescription for that disorder) the child may have decrease on appetite, which may subside, after he is using it for some time. About his personality, he may be calmer and focus on his tasks better and they may be few changes, that can happens while his body adjust the chemical imbalance. If your child is followed by a good pediatrician or a psychiatrist, you should feel confident about the treatment, and they will give you the proper guidance, to all of your concerns. Good luck!

My specialty is Dialectical Behavior Therapy which has a huge emphasis on mindfulness. In studying mindfulness, I came upon a doctor named Dan Siegel who specializes in the effects of mindfulness on one's neurobiology. He has some interesting research comparing the effects of ADHD medications and mindfulness practice among children with ADHD. He found that the practice of mindfulness resulted in the same decrease in ADHD symptoms as the use of psychostimulants. I included the url to his website below. Its worth checking out!

You need a solid diagnosis first, and yes ADHD meds can affect appetite and make some children look calmer and more quiet.natural remedies for ADHD are not effective

Different medications have different effects in each child. When using ADD medication we need to list the reasons we for starting the med and the consequences of not starting medication. the right medication has a significant positive effect on the childs life and education. Then if the benefits surpass significantly t, then it will be wise to choose the best fitting med .Like any meds there are some sideefects depending on the choice ofmeds.Decreased appetite is one of the sideefects.Eating in the morning and addind a meal late in the evening can help with the food. Personality change shouldnt be one of the sideeffects.Discuss the best choice of meds or other interventiions with your doctor.

Most children with ADD will initially experience the side effects of the stimulant medications (commonly used, but not the option). These include abdominal pain, headache, decreased appetite, sleep disturbance, etc. Not everyone will experience all of these and most are for a short period. Some children continue to experience low appetite which can be mitigated by using different medication and/or nutritional supplement to ensure adequate growth. After all, the positive response should by far outweigh the negative side effect of meds.

There are numerous published articles that mention non-med approach to ADD/ADHD treatment such as reducing sugary drinks, getting adequate sleep, avoiding artificial colors in food, neurofeedback, and some supplements such as Omega-3. Medication may only be one option, but adequate therapy along with medication is critical. Best of luck.
In my experience very often there are personality changes and appetite changes, although not necessarily for the worse. You also need to balance that concern with the cost of him NOT being on medication. Which is worse? Often medication can be avoided or more likely diminished if accompanied by psychotherapy with a psychologist familiar with ADD.
Dear "10 year old ADD Mom",

Absolutely the medications prescribed today suppress children's appetite and behavior. Most of these do not eat, only crave sugar or foods that break down to sugars: pasta, chicken nuggets, mac n cheese, bread, etc. There are many things you can do to resolve ADD without medications. Please look on my websitewww.originaldevelopment.org Feel free to submit a questions and I will schedule a time to have a conversation with you.

Let's find the reason your child can't focus and correct the problem. I have worked with children for 18 years. There are many reasons children express focus issues that may be involving key pieces of development, food sensitivities, overgrowth of yeast and bad bacteria, all affecting brain engagement. Engagement means does the brain turn on and off like it is designed to. There is a connection between the gut and brain. Whatever is going on in the gut effects the brain...just like the medication.

Yes some ADD medication can change your child's personality and appetite. Sometimes medication can be avoided depending on the severity of the ADD and the parent's desire, and ability to get involved. As well as their, availability .
There are 2 non-medication therapies that are effective for ADHD, CBT (cognitive behavior therapy) and MBSR

(mindfulness based stress reduction). There are numerous medications for ADHD, not all stimulants, therefore not all suppress appetite or "change personality."
