I'm not sure if I have an unusual period or a miscarriage. My period started then stopped, then started again, and my cramps were extremely more painful than usual.

Unusual period or miscarriage?
For you to have had an early pregnancy then possible miscarriage, you usually would have had to miss a period. A pregnancy test could help sort this out, although a very early pregnancy may not show positive on pregnancy test, but if the test is negative now it is reassuring. The painful cramps can occur sometimes without a specific cause, but I'd suggest you see a doctor if they continue.
Assuming your periods are usually regular, this could've just been an ovarian/menstrual "hiccup" and of no concern. To rule out pregnancy, take a pregnancy test. Are you still bleeding? To control your cramps consider taking NSAIDS such as Motrin/Advil/ibuprofen, Aleve, Anaprox, Cataflam, etc...). A heating pad may also help.
Early pregnancies can and often are lost as an "unusual period". These actually occur more often than most people realize but are usually of no health concern. Unusual periods more often than not occur for a lot of other reasons. For instance, if periods tend to be irregular there may be a lack of normal ovulation. If this is a frequent problem, this should be evaluated by your physician. It is not reliably possible to figure this out on your own.
