A report surfaced this weekend that Facebook has exceeded their financial expectations over the past year by generating in the neighborhood of $700M – $800M in revenue. How did Facebook do this? One word – advertising.

But, for any of you who’ve visited Facebook over the past couple years, you’re probably thinking “how can you make that much money off of advertising for a bunch of mindless games?” There’s a simple explanation for this – just like Facebook isn’t just “for the kids” anymore, the advertising isn’t just for Farmville & Mafia Wars.

The number of advertisers on Facebook has quadrupled over the past year, and now includes large, Fortune 500 brands like AT&T, Ford, & Blackberry.
