Dr. Zuckerberg’s Facebook Insight…

comments
We had the opportunity to join Dr. Edward Zuckerberg (yes, the father of that other Zuckerberg) for a presentation on social media for private practices to the Northern California Component of the Academy of General Dentistry yesterday. He gave some great tips on improving your Facebook Fan Pages by creating a welcome page using static iframes, utilizing Google Docs to create embeddable appointment request forms, and serving up before-and-after images from the cloud via Dropbox (one of our own favorite apps here at Doctorbase).
He also gave a great example of how to use Facebook to take advantage of a couple of the newer online trends over the past year – geolocation & deals. We’ve gone into detail on deal sites like Groupon and have touched on this rise of geolocation services like Foursquare in the past, but what Dr. Zuckerberg is doing with his Facebook Fan Page is a brilliant yet practical use of these recent developments in the social & mobile web.
Through his Facebook Fan Page, Dr. Zuckerberg has setup a deal for a free teeth whitening kit for patients who check in 3 times at his practice. The process is simple – when a patient shows up for their appointment, they simply open the Facebook app on their mobile phone and ‘check in’ on their mobile app. The Facebook app verifies the location of the patient (the geolocation part), and credits the patient with a check in. Upon checking in on their third appointment, the patient receives the free kit (the deal part). What does Dr. Zuckerberg get out of this? Each time a patient checks in at his practice, it becomes a referral from his patient by showing up in the news feed for all of the patient’s friends & family on Facebook.
Geolocation for healthcare is still in it’s infancy and we have yet to see if deals will remain as prevalent as they’ve become over the past couple years. But, unsurprisingly, Dr. Zuckerberg appears to have found a way to use Facebook to utilize both of them in-the-now to keep his existing patients engaged and have them refer his services to new patients.
