Most likely this is a contusion and the periosteum is inflamed causing the discomfort. The periosteum is the current overtop of the bone which has nerve endings and can be sensitive. At this point I would not see any need for x-rays. At this point I would observe if the symptoms worsen I would consider further evaluation by orthopedic surgeon.
