Understandably to the untrained eye this can be unsightly and alarming. What you're seeing is the formation of granulation tissue that is common following dental surgical procedures. It will still take as much as 2 weeks or more for the healing to progress and look normal. Nevertheless it's a good idea to ask. Never assume.
