Scars result from the wound-healing process. The process begins with inflammation, then to tissue or skin formation and ends with the formation of collagen, the main protein found in connective tissue that supports the skin, bone, cartilage and blood vessels. Scars ultimately form when there is too much or too little collagen in the healed skin. The appearance of a scar on a person’s body can be the source of embarrassment or discomfort for some people. While scars can not be completely removed, there are ways that scars can be reduced successfully. Severe scarring such as those caused by burns and trauma, often require surgery. But for more superficial scarring such as those caused by acne or chicken pox there are a variety of more minimally invasive treatments available. Treatments include laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, dermal fillers, and chemical peels.
