Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, consists of the removal or reposition of bagging or dropped skin or fat around the upper or lower eyelid. The procedure is primarily used as a cosmetic procedure to fix the sagging and puffing of skin around the eyes often caused by aging.  Although mostly used as a cosmetic procedure, there are cases where this type of procedure is not an elective.

Patients who have a condition of droopy eyelids, known as ptosis, causing their vision to be obstructed are ideal candidates for this procedure. Having acquired medical acknowledgement and proof that the eyelid is impairing the peripheral vision a patient can be elected for insurance coverage. Be sure to call your insurance and have an explanation of benefits as insurance policies can be different to each facility and doctor you choose.

Eyelid surgery is often performed at outpatient surgical facilities. The patient most likely will receive general anesthesia, but all patients should discuss with their surgeon and anesthesiologist the best options for sedation. After surgery the patient should be able to go home within an hour or two after receiving attention in the recovery unit. The patient should have special aftercare instructions received from their surgeons and explained by their nurses on how to take care of incisions and the sight of procedure once they go home, since healing can take up to two weeks.
