Any family history of events like this occurring with other family members? How is your overall flexibility? You may benefit from a regular/daily flexibility program. Just like having a regular strength training and endurance program is important, the same is true for flexibility, especially as we age and our muscles and tendons become less elastic. If you do begin such a program, I would start out very conservatively as not to strain, pull, or tear anything and as able, slowly progress to increase your flexibility. I would do a less intense series of stretches held for a longer period of time (1-3 min vs the traditional 30-60 seconds). As far as it being linked to any other pathology, family history can give us clues and I would also ask your primary care physician if he/she has any ideas as to what could be contributing, as he/she would be better aquatinted with your medical history.
