Can getting cavities filled trigger previous TMJ symptoms and what's the best way to support TMJ and clenching from stress?
Anonymous Patient
The typical reason your TMJ dysfunction acts up after an appointment is because you are wide open for such a long time. Keep your appointments as short as possible with intermittent breaks of just a few seconds. Refrain from doing multiple procedures in a single appointment. Hot moist heat compresses with stretching excersizes can loosen cramped muscles that occur after these appointments. If it is a filling that is not adjusted into a comfortable bite you would have more of a toothache but could also have a sense of soreness as well but given you have a history of TMJ Dysfunction it probably is just the lengthy appointments. Consider a night guard as well for your clenching and or bruxism. They work very well over all and can spare you not only muscular discomfort but breakage.
