Nightguards may be equally as effective on the upper or the lower. It is important that each opposing tooth touches the nightguard when you bite down to prevent unwanted movement of the opposing teeth. For a patient that may have only had lower braces, a lower nightguard would be a great choice. In this case, the nightguard also acts as a retainer to maintain the position of the lower teeth that it fits over as well as protect your teeth from the damaging effects of grinding and clenching.
