Questions & Answers Q&A

A. A very good question and a very common question. Bleeding gums is an indication of early gum disease, namely gingivitis. The bleeding is actually signaling to you that you need to floss more, not less. I recommend a thorough examination by your dentist complete with peridontal probings. This will tell you how advanced the disease is. Follow all recommended treatment by your dentist and do your home care (brushing and flossing twice a day) and you will be amazed at the results. I hope this helps.

Q: What got you into this specific medical field?
A: I wanted to be in the health professions. I also knew I wanted a family and time for my family so I wanted a health profession that didn't take over my entire life like what happens to so many physicians. Dentistry allows me to help people with their health and be artistic too. It truly blends science and art together.

Periodontal Exam | Sheryl R. Kortright | Dentist | Orinda, CAThree, two, three. Three, two, four... Have you heard these numbers being called out during your last dental cleaning visit? Do you know what they mean? If not, you should! (Hint: we are not learning to waltz!) These numbers represent a periodontal charting/probing that should be done at least once a year by your dental hygienist or dentist.  Why? Taking and recording these measurements is the only way to ensure that a person is free of gum disease or receiving the appropriate care for... read more

Digital X-ray | Sheryl R. Kortright | Dentist | Orinda, CARadiographs, or X-rays, are used in every dental office. They are a great way to see the teeth and bones, and they make sure they are healthy. In the past, X-rays were taken using little pieces of covered film. They were placed in the mouth and exposed using an X-ray machine. They always jabbed inside the mouth and seemed to take forever to be processed. Well, those days are now behind us! In the new era of dentistry, dentists are using digital radiography. The same X-ray machine is used to... read more

It’s that time again! Every six months, we are supposed to go to the dentist to get a cleaning. Sometimes, we have to go more than that if you need a new filling or want to bleach your teeth. Whatever the reason, there are a barrage of things that go through your mind about ten minutes before you walk in.

“Did I brush my teeth this morning?”

“Oh gosh, I haven’t flossed in the last six months, better do it today.”

“Do I need to bring money?”

Well, here are a few pointers on how to have a good... read more
