In most situations, it would be most reasonable for a dentist to place a temporary crown between the time of preparation and the time the definitive crown is seated. I suppose there could be a situation where a tooth was treated with a root canal and restored with a build-up and the dentist might opt not to place a temporary crown for one reason or another, but that would be a rare occurrence. Your situation might be unique.
