Running can lead to injuries including back. I have had patients that have had fractures found as the reasons why. Often times there is a history of injury in years prior or extensive sports or running history. The first step is to take a break from running and treat conservatively with ice and some over the counter ibuprofen or naprosyn (as directed). If there is no improvement a visit to your primary care provider is warranted. Do not start running until you have been pain free for at least 2 weeks. X-ray studies maybe recommended based on your physical examination. If you lose the ability to control your bowel movements or urinate then go to the hospital immediately.
