Can getting cavities filled trigger previous TMJ symptoms and what's the best way to support TMJ and clenching from stress?

In a perfect world, the dentist replaces exactly what the dentist removes, that is, the restoration needed to fill a decayed tooth is identical in size and shape to the natural tooth. The world is not perfect, and neither are dentists. So fillings may alter the bite, which can trigger TMJ symptoms. If this has happened, see the dentist that placed the restorations to have them adjusted. My patients with TMJ symptoms and/or excessive tooth wear are usually treated with a night guard which protects the teeth from further wear and eases any TMJ tenderness due to tooth grinding or clenching.
