As many have already mentioned, it could be an aphthous ulcer. It could also be a sloughing of dead bone. The bone on the tongue-side of the lower back teeth can be very thin. When removing a tooth, the some of the bone can detach that was next to the root of the tooth being removed and will try to work its way out. It has nothing to do with the doctor's technique - it's just something that sometimes happens. If sharp edges of the bone are showing through the gum, they can irritate the tongue as well. All this heals up in time, but can be very uncomfortable while waiting for that to happen.
Again, as others have advised, letting the dentist see what is going on will give you the best peace of mind about what, if anything, needs to be done.
