Simple answer as other DDS say YES. Cavities start as small area of dimineralisation and then slowly gets cavitation. Small areas may become demineralization so most dentist will do a wait and watch approach. Inter proximal decay will show up when it is about 60% dimineralisation. Unfortunately in your case it became big. So reevaluate your home care and diet. And just get the tooth fixed before the tooth needs root canal.
