BETNOTA PERSONAL NOTE FROM BETTINA

Hello !

During this joyous and magical time of the year, I wish you and your family abundance, happiness, good health and peace. I am grateful, as always, for the trust you all give me and for the opportunity to work with each and every one of you.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Here's to a Healthy, Successful & Strong 2013!

December is a good time to sit back, relax, and reflect on the previous year and the things we are thankful for. The last twelve months have brought many changes, with lots of ups and downs, like the hills of San Francisco. When you are at the top you see the most astonishing views; when you're in the valley it can be cold and foggy. All in all 2012 was a challenging year for me, but also a year of growth and development.

I'm thankful for the support of my family, friends, co-workers, partners, colleagues, and patients during the trying times of the past year. Part of surviving the stress of the holidays, or of life in general, is creating a supportive network and a nourishing, healing environment for ourselves. I'm glad I have people in my life who help me to always see the positive side of any hardship; to see the sun shining through the fog.

I appreciate the many exercise opportunities I have in my life -- walking my dogs, practicing Pilates, riding my bike -- because I know some people are not healthy enough to be able to enjoy these activities. I am grateful for the support of health professionals and trainers who have helped me learn new things and better ways to do the things I already knew how to do. I am thankful to have had the energy to stay consistent in my healthy habits this year, though I know there is always something to improve upon.

Most of all, I am thankful to my amazing, always vigilant support team. Read this month's article to find out more about all the wonderful people who help me to help you.  I couldn't do it without them and they all command my respect. Next time you run into one of them, give them a thumbs up to show you appreciate their impressive and extraordinary work.

Where December is a time for reflection, New Year's Eve is a time to celebrate all the old year gave us, and, best of all, everything the new year holds in store. Exciting new things are in the works at Rising Sun Physical Therapy. New partners and a brand-new marketing team to shine a light in the community will help us bring the benefits of increased health and better quality of life to even more people. That is all I will tell you for now. Stay tuned in 2013.

I don't know about you, but I am ready for some change. I want to create more clarity in my life and am looking forward to new faces, new strategies and lots new energy in 2013.

Happy, Healthy Holidays!

Bettina

CPACOUCH POTATOES ARISE: How We Stay Healthy

How Our Team Stays Healthy

Most of you know Paula Palomarez as the voice that answers the phone when you call. She is my lifeline, the administrative backbone of Rising Sun Physical Therapy. She helps ensure that there are no surprises at the back end of therapy and works hard to keep everyone happy.  Special thanks to you Paula!

When it comes to keeping fit, Paula loves to camp with her family; she also spends a lot of time watching her sons, 6 and 8, playing soccer and basketball. When she has a little time to take care of herself, Paula attends yoga lessons & credits yoga with helping her stay healthy.

Insurance can be hard to deal with, but since all of us want to survive, have food on the table and shelter for our families, Margaret Raskowsy makes sure that we get paid. She is the financial backbone of the company, a friend, advisor and ally to both therapists and patients.. If you ever have a question regarding a bill you received, she is the person who can help you.

Margaret is usually the caregiver to her family and friends. She enjoys fostering kittens until they are old enough to be adopted and tells us that her dogs are her babies. She enjoys walking with them to stay healthy and fit.

You may have seen our office assistant, the very creative Zola, around the office in the afternoons. While still a high school student, she is always happy to lend a helping hand and keeps us moving along.

Zola walks to keep fit, and says, "San Francisco is a great place to walk, especially the seemingly tedious hills. After only a few minutes of walking up a hill you'll come face to face with a view that could make angels cry; they are worth every step."

Jose Ramirez is our handyman, driver, advisor, marketer and creator of new space. He' been a very important part of making our healing space more functional. There is nothing he cannot fix. From the computer to the drain, he is the man to call.

Jose takes care of his health by spending time relaxing with his friends and family, enjoying every moment, and taking life one step at a time.

You've probably met or spoken to one or maybe even all of these folks. There are some more behind-the-scene folks I'd like to introduce you to:

My lovely daughter, Ganesha Balunsat, is a talented graphic designer.

Ganesha's true passions are graphic design and photography; she loves to document the world around her. To stay healthy she eats healthy, drinks lots of water, and goes out dancing.

Tim Johnson is our web designer. Together he and Ganesha are creating a new look for Rising Sun Physical Therapy. The next year will bring changes to our graphics, website,  and newsletter.

Tim loves  to walk his dog and swim for fun and fitness. When I asked him what he does for fun, he said, "Go to parties and follow the news." Now I know who to ask to get the latest news!

Dyanna Larson, our editor, makes sure that what we write makes sense and that you get a newsletter from us every month. We succeeded in 2012.

Staying healthy and having fun at the same time is important to Dyanna. She walks funny themed 5K races. Between races she does water aerobics and light weight training. She says her big goal is to run a 5K instead of walking it.

Grapefruit, Pear and Spinach Green Smooth ~ inspired by Pam Sterling

Ingredients:

1 large grapefruit
1 large pear

1/2 cucumber

1 healthy handfull of spinach

Directions:

1. Blend all ingredients in a Vitamix or high speed blender. 2. Enjoy!

Grapefruit:  This fiber-rich sweet and tangy fruit helps lower cholesterol, prevent kidney stones, and aids the digestive system.

Cucumber:  Nutrient dense cucumbers, which are 95% water, help flush out toxins and alkalize the body.

Pear:  Packed with anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties, pears also deliver fiber to aid in elimination.

Local, seasonal vegetables help your body stay in tune with nature, so do your food shopping at a farmers market as often as possible. Farm fresh produce is often more flavorful, too!

Testimonial:

After a double mastectomy I learned there were simple measures that could be taken to prevent developing the problem of lymphedema.  As an RN I tried to educate myself about lymphedema since I had taken care of patients that had been debilitated by this problem.  After a double mastectomy and a problem with ongoing seromas after surgery I was particularly concerned I might develop this complication myself.  One of the things i liked most about Bettina's class the solid, practical information she provided in a short class without my having to do even more research in addition to what I was doing about cancer, surgery and recovery.  Not only did I feel less overwhelmed but she gave information in the class that I hadn't read about in my research.  I've taken the information I got in her class and developed a plan for myself that supports my recovery after surgery and gives me confidence I am doing the most I can to prevent developing this problem.
