In the event that your child has an underdeveloped palate and the upper jaw is smaller then the lower the palatal expanders are advisable to expand the constricted palate and align it with the lower jaw. the palatal expansion is done gradually with an appliance that is cemented into the mouth with a crank in the middle that will push the two halves of the patients palate apart, widening the jaw. It is usually done in children prior to Orthodontic treatment. this treatment can be a bit uncomfortable and may require OTC pain management. This treatment is done over a period of a few weeks to a few months. The expansion will create spacing between the two central incisors ( two most front teeth) on top as well as change the way back teeth come together. https://www.google.com/search?q=palatal+expander&espv=2&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Rj7hU-TLHYOgyASSv4KADQ&ved=0CB8QsAQ&biw=1600&bih=775
