Can getting cavities filled trigger previous TMJ symptoms and what's the best way to support TMJ and clenching from stress?
Anonymous Patient
Stretching your mouth open in a normal way as we do during a filling can "trigger" your TMJ muscles to have a painful episode. Best short term treatment. Advil, Moist heat and gentle stretch massage. find the places that are tender and break up the accumulated lactic acid with gentle massage. it will be sore - but the massage helps get rid of the lactic acid and put you on the road to comfort. Prevention includes good posture, range of motion exercises, and a night guard. Also if you clench or grind your teeth during the day - remember the saying, "Lips together - teeth apart" Your teeth are not supposed to be together except for the few seconds when you swallow and during the few seconds when you bite into something.
