Can getting cavities filled trigger previous TMJ symptoms and what's the best way to support TMJ and clenching from stress?
Anonymous Patient
Getting a cavity filled can trigger TMJ issues if you strain your jaw while keeping it open during the procedure. There is also the possibility of the fillings changing your bite and throwing your jaw out of wack. To support TMJ issues during conscious hours you can take Ibuprofen, rest the jaw by minimizing it's movements (small bites, soft foods, avoid gum and other chewing habits) and unclench when you find yourself clenching. During sleep , a night guard is recommended to be worn to protect the teeth and reduce clenching forces to relax the jaw.
