When a filling is done, the dentist will check and the adjust the bite during the finishing part. Sometimes, because you are numb or have been open for a long time, it can be difficult to determine if there could be a small area that is hitting harder than it used to. If there is a high spot, it can bruise the tooth slightly when you bite down and cause discomfort to the tooth. If I have a patient that has discomfort on biting after a filling, I urge them to come in for an adjustment. If the sensitivity you feel to cold goes away after several seconds, chances are good that the sensitivity will improve with time, as that may mean that the tooth has reversible pulpitis. If the discomfort lingers after you've had something cold, the nerve in the tooth may not get better and could need endodontic therapy. I would return to the dentist and have the bite checked and allow them to review your situation to get a more clear direction.
