Consider going to ED if pain is accompanied by fever, vomiting or is progressively worse at the right lower part of the abdomen. Stomach pain is often caused by viral infections in children and can present with pain in the absence of vomiting or diarrhea. Abdominal pain is the dominant symptom in "mesenteric adenitis", typically due to a virus causing enlargement of lymph nodes within the abdomen. Abdominal pain with mesenteric adenitis can be severe, usually "comes and goes" and resolves without treatment over 7-10 dys. Anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen can sometimes offer relief. Seek immediate medical attention if pain is severe and persistent (especially if worse at right lower abdomen) or if pain is accompanied by high fever, persistent vomiting, or blood in the stool or vomitus.
