There should be a reason that a crown was placed in the first place. One would be a fracture line in the tooth, which allows bacteria to invade the pulp. If the bacteria are in the pulpal space prior to the crown placement, pressure builds in the pulp resulting in excruciating pain.. Root canal treatment will correct the problem, but the new crown may have to be replaced if it fractures while gaining access to the pulp..The other option is extraction. Find a good dentist and good luck.
