"Looking for advice on a deep cavity issue. I had a deep cavity a year or so ago. I have another deep cavity and I'm not sure what to do because... I went to the dentist and he saw on my two upper back molars I have decay around fillings that are already large. The dentist was not even sure that I would be able to keep the teeth at all. He said if they were to place crowns, they would have to do crown lengthening. The decay is in an awkward place, he said amalgam would work better, but I won't do that kind. He also said that if the very back tooth was taken out then it would make crowning the neighbor tooth more likely to be succesful, because of the position of decay. Do you have any suggestions for me?"

Dear patient:
In my experience, I have hardly ever found crown lengthning necessary. 99% of the time, a crown will save the tooth, and this is what I would do. I would love to see an xray to make sure. We give free consultations to all our patients, in case you live or work close to Norwalk, Ca.
