If your breathing issues are enough that you can tell that you breathe through your mouth, you likely would benefit from surgery to correct your deviated septum-if it is indeed the septum that is causing you problems. It is true that a large percentage of people have a deviated septum, most of these people are not symptomatic, therefore do not need surgery for correction. If you snore, are a mouth breather, or feel that it is difficult to get adequate air through your nose, you likely could benefit from surgery. There are studies that show that this can affect your heart health when you do not have adequate air intake through your nose. Best to contact a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon or Ear Nose and Throat doctor to evaluate your nose to determine if your septum is the cause of your issues, and to review risks and possible complications of surgery.
