Could be many things from stress to strain. Having said that, because of the symptoms, you should take the time to be evaluated.
There two sources of nerve compression that can produce this type of sensation along the head, face and neck. The greater occipital nerve originates from the first and second vertebrae and provide sensation along the back and side of the head just above the ear. Thus, touching the upper part of the neck where this nerve is can reproduce these symptoms, especially when it has irritated. Secondly, disc herniations at the upper part of the neck can also compress the edge of the spinal cord where the pain fibers controlling the face, head and neck are distributed. A thorough physical and neurological exam by a chiropractor or spine specialist can determine where the symptoms are coming from. In addition, obtaining x-rays of the cervical spine with stress positions (bending forward, back and side to side) can differentiate between instability verses lack of movement between the vertebrae--both can compress the greater occipital nerve. This will ensure the treatment is safe and effective.
