  2. All answers submitted by healthcare professionals (you) are for entertainment purposes only and do not constitute doctor-patient relationships. All patients must agree to this before using Ask DoctorBase.
  3. Our software and our Marketing Engineering staff review each answer and optimize your answers for keywords valuable to your specialty. It is a well kept secret that doctors (you) - not SEO consultants - are the ones who have the most valuable content prized by search engines. Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic

I have recently started taking 500 mg Metformin twice daily. (I also take 20 mg Lisinopril daily but have been on that a while.) Ever since I began the Metformin Ive had diarrhea. I have a strong body odor, bad breath, & smell like urine in addition to the body odor. I bruise very easily, not even knowing how. I sweat a lot, which seems to be the precursor to all these other things. Im assuming this is related to the Metformin? Please tell me how to stop smelling so gross!!

I agree with everything that Dr. Lamartiniere said. Going with the extended release version and reducing the dose of Metformin would be the first step. The diarrhea will usually subside so you could eventually increase the dose gradually to a maximum of 2500 mg a day.

The other symptoms you mentioned would be very atypical for Metformin. I.e. it is doubtful that they are related.

A natural, alternative herbal type medication that works even better than Metformin is Berberine 500m.g. 2X/day. It can be used instead of or added to Metformin if needed.

The cause of type II diabetes is insulin resistance. This is caused by insulin receptor exposure to too much insulin for too long. What caused the insulin elevation was your constant intake of starchy glucose producing food..... Glucose is what causes insulin to be released.

So the best way to reverse diabetes is to stop doing what caused it in the first place. Avoid starchy food as if it were poison.

Diets that will cause weight reduction along with gradually re-sensitizing your insulin receptors would be an Atkins diet, the zone diet or the Palio diet.
Metformin commonly causes loose stools and occasionally diarrhea. The other symptoms are unlikely to be related to metformin. The first thing would be to contact your doctor. Likely he would recommend cutting back to one tablet daily with food and slowly increase dose. The long acting version is typically better tolerated and a reasonable alternative. Overall metformin is the best first line medicine for Diabetes due to effectiveness, potential for weight loss and no risk of low blood sugars.

Did you read the adverse reactions? your complaints are DIRECTLY related to your drug use:

"Stop taking metformin and get medical help right away if you develop any of the following symptoms of lactic acidosis: unusual tiredness, dizziness, severe drowsiness, chills, blue/cold skin, muscle pain, fast/difficult breathing, slow/irregular heartbeat, stomach pain with nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea."

now you are creating an acid/base problem on top of your current issues.

It is really important to take the Metformin with a meal -- usually the largest meal of the day. Start with only one tablet daily for a month then increase to two if your blood sugar readings are over 150 fasting. Increase your intake of water and cut back on Carbohydrates. Increase your proteins so you don't get hungry.
