My Dr did not perform any type of nerve testing other than hitting me on my funny bone with his reflex instrument. Of course I felt it he hit my *funny bone* but said it was a clear sign that my ulnar nerve was trapped and I needed surgery or else I was going to end up with a claw hand. I was scared and allowed him to do the surgery. Six months later o have severe atrophy and loss of use in that hand. I had a second opinion and the Dr had to do surgery because 1st had severely pinched the nerve.

Nerve injury
Electrodiagnostic testing (Electromyography and Nerve conduction studies) performed by a board certified physician is remarkably sensitive in localizing nerve compression, such as the Ulnar nerve at the elbow, and should ALWAYS be performed prior to any surgical intervention for symptoms of peripheral nerve compression.
