Aspirin and valproic acid interaction

Hello. Can I take aspirin (500mg) for tension headaches if I'm also on Depakote ER 1000 mg/d. ? Like 1-2 times per week? I read on drugs.com/interaction checker, that single low dose is unlikely to cause valproate toxicity. Is this right?

Thanks.

You have 2 potential interactions: 1) Aspirin with Effexor could increase bleeding risk (stomach or bruising). Now, unless you know your Pharmacogenetic profile specifically if you are a poor metabolizer of CYP2D6, this would be an issue.

2) Aspirin can increase Depakote levels by inhihibiting proteins binding effect. Not usual if only taking 500mg aspirin 1-2x per wk, but other factors of metabolism need to be assesses, called pharmacokinetics.

You should not have a problem using aspirin once or twice a week. There are some interactions with all of your medications. Make sure to take aspirin with food.

True, dosing 500 mg of aspirin 1-2 times weekly should not affect your Depakote level in any toxic way. However, be aware that this combination with Effexor may cause increased risk for bleeding. Again, dosing only 500 mg of aspirin 1-2 times weekly should not cause any concerns. Monitor for symptoms of nausea, stomach discomfort, or bruising/bleeding.
