Chest Pain When Exercising

I'm a 26 year old male. I weigh 330 and have started working out with a friend of mine. Cardio and weights.

I've been diagnosed with GERD, but wanted advice on chest pain I've been having while Exercising. When my hear rate exceeds 170 I feel a flip flop in my chest accompanied by pain. It's temporary, but may happen up to 10 times until I slow my heart rate down. It's very unnerving.

Over the last year I've had 4 or 5 ecg, blood work, ultrasound, and event monitor. All came back fine.

At your age, maximum predicted heart rate is somewhere between 180-200. What you feel may be premature contractions due to increased sympathetic drive (adrenaline). These premature beats can sometime cause chest pressure or heaviness.

Request exercise Stress EKG (exercise tolerance test).

This sounds like an arrhythmia .please add more electrolyte supplements like Gatorade to the liquid intake . Some times the extra heart beats are difficult to pick up . go for a monitored exercise stress test ecg to get evaluated

This complex scenario warrants a face-to-face cardiologist appointment to discuss a physician-guided weight loss regimen, and a treadmill stress test. In the meantime, avoid caffiene, energy drinks, and stick to a low fat, low salt, low carbohydrate diet rich in vegetables, legumes, avoiding red meat, and consuming white meat no more than twice per week.

I concur with Dr. Eng -- you should have a treadmill exercise tolerance test and evaluate your exercise capacity. palpitations and chest pain may relate to cardiac straining or overworking your heart. For exercise, cardio or aerobic is the best and safest for all ages. For all types of exercise, you need to ramp it up as tolerated and exercise regularly to be fit.

Even though you are young, being so heavy does increase your risk for Coronary Artery Disease and if you are frequently experiencing any exertional chest pains while exercising, please refrain from further strenuous exercise until you have an exam with some type of exercise treadmill stress test and are medically cleared to exercise by a Physician or Cardiologist BEFORE you continue with any further work-outs!
